Green Sea Turtle

When we were in Hawaii many years ago, I did several painting and this sea turtle was fun to paint with deep and rich colors. The ones we saw on the beach, were not quite so colorful...but then, I'm the one with the paints and so decided to make it brighter, as I used it as a note card.

The Banner painting is called "Reflection". What better place than the ocean for pondering the things that matter most to you. When our youngest daughter was a baby we lived in Santa Barbara, and I would take her to the beach in the mornings after I dropped off the other children at school, and put her under my sweater and nurse her. Those are some of my most precious moments and memories.

This is the "duo" that goes with the gal in the Banner. I did them at the same time and made them into note cards, that were quite popular...We like looking at elegant women, even if we are blue jeans and tennis shoes.

PAINTING PEOPLE

The new header I chose for the New Year is one of my personal favorites because of the challenge of doing a black and white and color on the same painting. It's inspiration came from a photo in a National Geographic magazine.

The story behind this picture is the black and white girl in the background is the young Ziegfeld Follies Dancer that were popular so many decades ago. The colored picture is this same young dancer, but as the last living Ziegfleld Follies Dancer. A bit of fun, watercolor and history.

Chris Jones over at Flamblogger spent Thanksgiving in Hawaii. She took this picture from her balcony and as soon as I saw it, I remembered a watercolor I did when we were in Hawaii several years ago. As I recall, this was also from our balcony.

I really doubt if it's the same tree, and there were many like this on the Island. But it sure struck a cord, when I saw her photo!

Painting from a Video

Have you every painted from a Video? It's a real challenge. Charles Reid is one of my favorite watercolor artist, and I tried to paint this picture as he was painting it. He works really fast from real models, in this case his wife and daughter. He pencil sketches first, and then begins his style of lose wet colors. I had to stop the video and back it up several times, as it was much to fast for my brain to work. However, it was a very fun project, and I think I will buy one of his videos, as the one I was using was borrowed.

Now that my watercolor classes are over, I've got to find new projects to keep me painting. What are you working on now?

FINAL WEEK AT MY WATERCOLOR CLASS

Well, since it was our last week, I thought I better tackle water again so I could have Jay's expertise to help me. I was pretty happy with this one, and will continue to work on water on my own.

I'm working on a scene from England farm land, and when I finish it, I'll post it.

Jay said today that he will hold another workshop in October, and another in Spring. I will sure plan to take those if I can.

Watercolor Class ~ Week 5

Week 5 took us outside to the Japanese Gardens and another chance to practice water and reflections. This is just a lovely spot and there were only four of us in class today...so we got some real special attention. I love to paint rocks, but still working on making the water look real. Wish all of you could walk the gardens with me. They are so beautiful.

My "handy dandy" rolling crate with handle is so perfect to put all my art supplies, my purse, my hat and of course some chocolate chip cookies for my new artist friends and Jay, our instructor.

I told Jay I was sad it was coming to an end, and said he will hold another class in October....so I know what I'll be doing in October!

What are you doing to be creative these days.

If I don't visit you very often, just want you to know Don and I are taking an active role in the care of his Aunt Trula, (89) who lives across the street. We're making sure she has meals and takes her medication. So this take a little time away from the computer...but what a blessing it is for us to do this for her, and it means she can live at home a while longer. (She's been in her house 50 years).

WATERCOLOR CLASS ~~ WEEK 4 ~ Ocean Scenes

Today was really a challenge but extremely fun, and I think I'm beginning to get a feel for "water". The above painting is from a photograph along the California coast.

Another scene showing a lot more water and sky. Our instructor is so helpful and spends time with hands on help. Today he worked with some of us inside, and other's went back out to the gardens. I really want to master water, so will be practicing this week with more water scenes.

Saturday we left the class room and went into the gardens. These are my new artist friends and the gentleman sitting in the front with his paints on the ground in front of him is our teacher.

Jay is giving us a demonstration in sketching and painting before he sends us off to find our spot and what we want to paint. I decided on the cottage on the grounds.

I am a visual learner, so watching him sketch and paint was so helpful.

This is the cottage several of us decided to use as our model for our first attempt outside.

This is my finished painting. It was really challenging, since I love to paint people, flowers, and animals. I'm not good with buildings, as I can't draw a straight line....But that why I love this class. It's stretching my envelope and facing my fears of buildings I think I will conquer it!!

I'm glad you are coming along with me via the Blog, but would love to have you in the class in person.

WATERCOLOR CLASS ~~ MORE BASICS

Saturday was my second week at the Descanso Gardens Watercolor class. We continued the basics with octagons, cylinders, and spheres. Getting something on flat paper to look round and 3 dimensional.

The other thing we worked on was "dry brush" for grass or foliage.

The last exercise was thumbnail pictures using the background washes, and dry brush grass, trees and flowers.

Next week we take our class room into the Gardens, to sketch and paint from the gardens. It will be fun to do some paint on location.

BACK TO BASICS

The watercolor classes I'm taking at Descanso Gardens for the next six Saturday mornings is going to be a lot of fun. Today was the first class, and there are 6 women and 1 gentlemen so it's really personal and hands on. The artist conducting the class is excellent. Most of the participants are first time watercolor and so he's beginning with the BASICS.

I love this, as I always learn by going back to the basics. Today we did washes, and shapes. Working with flat and round brushes. I know some new friendships are being forged, and I look forward to really improving my skills.

TAKING A WATERCOLOR CLASS

A few months ago, we became members of the Descanso Gardens, about 15 minutes from our home. A few days ago I received their quarterly publication and they are offering a six week Watercolor Class beginning July 23.

I have been wanted to take another class, but didn't want to drive to a college miles away to find one. This one is perfect ~ so I registered today and will have the first class July 23 from 10 AM to Noon. I'm very excited because I know this will push me to paint every day again and challenge me to sketch and paint the beauties of the Gardens. I took the blossom in the top picture on one of my visits, and think it may be one of my subjects to paint.

This has been a busy week, our grandson's 8th grade graduation. Taking our granddaughters out to dinner. Meeting a blog friend for breakfast...Just like your life, I'm sure.

So this after noon, decided to take a few minutes and add some watercolor washes to my sketch of Blue Boy. I should have taken more time, but have company coming tomorrow.

Glass is not an easy thing to capture. How do you paint glass??

My grandson gave me this beautiful Beta Fish for my birthday. I named him "Blue Boy" and I've done my sketch, and will add some water color this week. Some of my artist friends like Heather, sketch and paint daily... I really want to get into that kind of discipline because I sure get "rusty" when I'm not painting often.

So I hope to post the painting this week, and wonder what are you working on in your Artistic Adventures?

Mother and Child

My Art Blog has been sitting on the back burner for several weeks, as my life got extremely busy with trips, family gathering and appointments.

But I wanted to put something on for Mother's Day, and I did this watercolor some time ago from a Missionary Calendar of Mother and Child. It was one of my first attempts with different skin colors. I know there is a touching story behind this photo but I can only imagine.

The past few weeks have been a "whirlwind" for me. If you want details click on my other blog on the sidebar. I just haven't had time to do a flower for our Art Challenge this month. I did want to have a contribution, so I'm posting a quick sketch and watercolor I did a while back. I like the simplicity of it and the splash effect on the water can.

When life slows down a little and we get back to normal.... We'll have another challenge. Any ideas?????

WILD GERANIUM BY JANICE

Janice said she drew this in Paint Ship Pro (PSP) then whistled over to Picasa where first she added a red tint, then did a soft black and white focus on just the petals on the ground. Then she whipped it back to PSP again and made a frame. The above is her final result and something a little different though still hand-drawn from scratch.

I love this Janice, and I love so read how you accomplished it, since I know nothing of PSP and Picasa.. So thanks so much...gotta love the softness and that splash of red.

MorningAJ has given us a beautiful and delicate version of her Sweet Pea. One of my favorite flowers. She has done this in sutble watercolors and captured this delicate flower. When we use to vacation in Oakhurt, CA, wild sweet peas grew all around the cabin. I always picked a few for the table. To see her blog, click on her name on the sidebar.

Chis your crocuses are just beautiful. The hint of Spring, and the colors are perfect. You have really mastered Prisma Pencils. I need lessons from you.

ART CHALLENGE ~ FLOWERS

My friend Janice shared two of her "flowers" with us. Her style of painting is much different than most and I just love it. This first one is known as xieyi painting ~it is 'one breath' freestyle Chinese brush painting rather than the detailed 'gongbi' painting that often takes a few years to complete. This one is done with Chinese ink and watercolour on 140lb watercolor bloc.

This is her digital painting entitled 'Lotus' rendered in Paint Shop Pro. It actually became the cover of an author's book! It took a good week to finish as there was so much blending required. This would be considered the detailed 'gongbi' type of painting.

Sandy's People Art Challenge

Sandy said this was a made up face that started to look like somebody so she kept on going until she could see more of a resemblance. Her beautiful portrait is a mix of pencil and paint program~~any coloring is done in the program which includes her eyes and lips.

STRETCHING THE ENVELOPE

I had to laugh at the comments. Chris and AJ don't WANT to draw or paint people, but say they NEED to. Sandy uses people in may of her paintings, from family members, and grandchildren so she is ready to roll.

So here's the deal. You find a picture that you want to do, or use your imagination. Magazines are full of "people" pictures. No time frame for this one...just jump in with both feet, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the results. You can also go to google images of people, but make sure there are no copyright laws attached.

I'm going to start on a new one myself ~~ So I'm off to find a picture.

It was quite obvious that drawing and painting people did not bring any applause!! HaHa. I don't want this art blog to scare anyone off because of a challenge. I'm open to any and all of your suggestions for future challenges.

PAINTING PEOPLE

It doesn't look like we are going to get any more entries for the Owl Challenge, so I think we will take a little break and let everyone take a breather before we open up a new challenge.

I love to paint people. This is one of my favorites. I painted this from a brochure from Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas. I was able to capture their expressions, and that was my goal.

How do you feel about painting people? Would you like an art challenge of that nature? Let me know and I will gather some pictures. If you have any photos to share please let me know.

All the captions on Chris's pictures are from her Blog. She did all this wonderful art work on her recent cruise. Great job Chris ~~ Thanks so much for sharing.

But then I decided I needed one of her with her bright yellow eyes wide open because she is a bundle of energy and this painting shows her in a more typical pose.

This kitten has a history. She is named Junie and I picked her out from the shelter as a possible adoptee for my friend Evelyn. ( I volunteer at our local cat shelter, if you are new to my blog.) I wanted to paint her looking warm, comfortable and happy, because that's what she is in her new home. That makes me feel warm comfortable and happy too.

This was based on a photograph from Notes From the Rookery. Used by permission. I saved this photo for several weeks to take on the trip with me. Thanks Danielle.

This is the only water color I did as the vibration of the ship, tho' not excessive, was just enough to make my hand shake more than usual. The unusual thing about this painting is that it was my first try at doing something out of my head -- that is, no copying from another photo or picture. Need more practice at this and some touch up could still be done.

All these paintings except the one of the girl with the black cat were done in Prisma Colors Pencils. None of them are very large, about 5x7 down to 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. I'm still trying to find just the right kind of paper to use for Prisma Colors. These papers were too rough for me to get a smooth painting-like finish.

Mr. Toast's Christmas Tea ~Smashing Success!

Just a few pictures to show you what a delightful time we had. Oh my, the Castle was elegant, our rooms beautiful, the butlers just perfect, gracious, helpful, handsome!!!! And the Food, to die for. Mr. Toast went all out, and we ate from sunup to sundown, and late into the evening. Mr. Wagner escorted me to my room about midnight, as (unlike those younger more energetic gals) I was ready for a hot bath, a cup of tea and the down pillows and comforters Alfred provided.

I sent Robert back to the party since even if he's OLDER than me.... He can party all night. Watch out girls...he on his way back to the party. For me.....sweet dreams and memories of a most wonderful trip and Christmas Tea Party.

ARRIVIED AT THE TOROSAY CASTLE

Well after seeing all the Luggage Betsy is taking to Scotland on the Orient Express, I decided I better take a few more items. And Heaven's to Betsy" I needed one trunk for the "goodies" I've been baking. The aroma in the house is delightful... Must go put on the tea kettle.

Oh dear, I wonder if Mr. Toast will be upset at all this luggage. It's a good thing money is not a problem. In a fantasy trip, you can be a Millionaire! I promise I'll tip big to the fella that has to carry my luggage.

I decided to go with Jessica-Alba's Formal Hairstyle for the Christmas Tea. I think the braid gives it an elegant touch. Don't you? I really loved Betsy's up-sweep of curls. SCOTLAND ~ The destination for the Christmas Tea

Mr. Toast is such a excellent host, and the destination he has secured for our 2nd Annual Christmas Tea is fabulous. The Torosay Castle in Scotland. I've never been in a castle, so I'm counting the days til December 5th.

WHAT A FUN SHOPPING TOUR FOR THE TEA

With Mr. Toast's 2nd Annual Christmas Tea, just around the corner I spent this last week shopping! I decided on basic black for my gown, and the only difference between the model in the picture and me.... is the size of the dress (ha ha ha)!! Lovely isn't it?

Why not go all out, and wear diamonds instead of pearls with my "Basic Black". I think this will feel pretty "cool" hanging around my neck. The earrings will be an added touch, since I will be wearing my hair "UP" that evening. (Picture of hairdo later)

Fell in love with these shoes and evening purse, and think it will set off the rest of the outfit very nicely!! Do you agree?

Something about long gloves, that just say elegance, so I added a pair to the wardrobe!

We know it's going to be chilly...perhaps even snow... so this full length mink and cashmere fur coat should do the trick. Have you done your shopping yet.... I'm so anxious to see what you've decided to wear.

I'm as nervous as a school girl going to her first Prom Night.... I peeked in last year at Mr. Toast's 1st Annual Tea, and loved what I saw but didn't have a clue what to do!! But after visiting all the guests and enjoying the elegance of the evening ~~ Decided to give it a shot!

I decided if I couldn't have the perfect "Escort" I would forget the whole thing. But I called Tony this morning, and he talked to his Dad, and confirmed the date and time, and his Dad will fly in to escort me to the gala event.

With my escort in the bag, and his credit card in my pocket ~~ I'm off to do my shopping!!!!

From time to time I will share some of my own art work, and tell the story behind it. You can visit anytime you like, but no pressure to have to create something right now.

This is a busy time of year, so enjoy getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas and do stop by for a visit or two.

Will be taking a little break and vacation in Tahoe for a week, so I'm not going to begin a new Art Challenge until we get back. Please feel free to continue sending in your artwork for the Animal Challenge.

THE BANDIT IS BACK ~

Lori submitted this from one of her students. She said one of her students, Tina Eibl, came to class with this pastel drawing from one of the photographs in the latest challenge. It was done on sandpaper! Thanks Tina, great job!

Had a little time this afternoon, so sat down and put a layer of watercolor pencil down first, and then added water to bring out the colors, and get the dark black for his eyes, nose mask and ears. The background was so plain I added some foliage and made the wall brick. This was a fun Sunday afternoon.

Cat's Momma has a lovely and crisp watercolor of Abe's Blue Bird. I love the background she added to bring out the color of the bird. Great job.

Do you remember "Mr. Ed" from the TV Series. When I finished my try at the Lori's horse, I kept thinking Mr. Ed. This was a really quick sketch with pen and ink and a splash of watercolor. We are heading out soon to see our Grandson's Homecoming Football game, so I probably won't get another done today.

Sandy little Bandit is adorable. What is it about this animal that so charming and captivating... This has been a busy week, but I plan to get started on one real soon. So keep those animals coming.

Cat's Momma has given her rendering of the little "Bandit" and I love those eyes. I think he's looking right at me.

We have a new contributor of photos for our Art Blog. Mary had given me permission to use her pictures of the Big Horn Sheep she took on a recent trip. What magnificent animals.

Shall we try a few more animals in this new Art Challenge?? This adorable "bandit" is from Abe Lincoln's Photograph Collection. Have you ever seen a sweeter face?

I took this picture at the Santa Barbara Zoo, and loved the symmetric design these Giraffe's formed. Should be an interesting challenge.

This is one of Lori's photos, and I thought it might be fun to try something in black and white. Or if you choose to add color...great!

I love the composition of this shot of Abe Lincoln's Blue Jay. Just gorgeous! I'm ready to try this one.

As a child I loved the story of the "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and even though the picture is small, I thought they were too cute to leave out of the challenge.

Open Air Painting

I was sorting through some old paintings, and found this one of the pumpkin on the table with brick wall. In a class I took up North, we all went with out with our paper and paints to an Open Air Fruit Stand. That was really embarrassing for me to be sitting there painting and having people walk by or stand and watch you! That was pushing MY envelope. Have you ever done that?

I really like the contrast of Crusty's oranges and blues! I like the feel of the texture of these leaves.... Nice work.

Love pencil sketches. Love what Crusty did with the little boy in the pumpkin patch. She mentioned she ran out of paper, and couldn't sketch his cute little feet... Really like what you did.

These pumpkins look like they could be made out of material and stuffed... but I think they are real. What do you think? Real or not, I like the picture.

Here are the final kittens for our Art Challenge "Meow" by Chris. They are from the shelter where she volunteers. Photograph below... Good job Chris...I'm ready to adopt them.

Out of all the photos, fell in love with this kitten on the quilt looking out the window. The bowl was a challenge trying to get the reflections of the quilt. I had to put the colored pencils away and go back to what I know...watercolor. Do we have any more cats out there?????

Oh Chris ~ this is so cute and well done. It's obvious you love cats. This is a wonderful rendering. Thanks!

Cat's Momma, knows her cats!!! Doesn't this look real, and the fur...I feel like I can reach out and touch it, don't you?

This is my first attempt to do something with the Prisma Colored Pencils I bought last week. I'm not sure I have the patience to layer, layer, layer. I'm going to do the same one in watercolor and see the difference.

This is my watercolor. It doesn't look like a domestic cat, but something out in the wild. I'm going to make my last try the little kitten on the quilt, looking out the window.

Morning AJ has given us "Grumpy" face this morning, and it reminded we of what I look like when I wake up...HaHaHa! Great job AJ. He's so "Grumpy" he's cute!

Sandy on the other hand, has given us elegance. What is this cat pondering....a mouse?

PAINTING IN THE FAST LANE

My desire is always to take a subject and take my time. Then I start painting, and can't get out of the fast lane. So I must accept the fact, that I'm a fast painter, and even if I'm not totally satisfied with the result, I know next time I try to paint in the slow lane, I'll be moving over. It's who I am. So this is my Personal Art Challenge that I was going take my time to do, and didn't. But I had FUN and isn't that what it's all about!!!!!

I love it when an Artist has a sense of humor. If you check out Crusty's blog, you will see her comment that her figs suck!!! I don't think so at all. Chris was saying we are more critical of our own work than anyone else. Your figs look plump and ripe.... Think I'll have one!

OK, I tried one of Sandy's and this was difficult!!! I've never tried to watercolor jewelry! I didn't get the "sparkle" like I wanted, but hey, this is my first try!!!

This is my plate of figs. I was pretty happy with this one, since I think it looks pretty much like the photograph. By the way, the figs are gone, I ate them all with dark brown rye bread and goat cheese. Yummy snack.

Chris has finished her Coopers Hawk and it is a wonderful rendering. Thanks for hanging in there Chris... Hope you have time to try a still life.

Still Life Art Challenge

Several suggestions for a "Still Life" Art Challenge so I will be gathering pictures for that and posting them in the next few days.

We will start out with my plate of figs, and if you have a good photo of a still life arrangement let me know, and I will add it.

This wonderful pan of fresh veggies is perfect. Thanks AJ, after we paint it, I'd like to cook it up and eat it~

THE DRAGON AND THE SPARROW

Well this is another wonderful rendering of the White Crown Sparrow! You have the ability to make your painting soft and delicate. Nice job! And you don't look so bad yourself posing with your painting.

Chris your White Crown Sparrow is just wonderful. I love what you did with the background texture, the rocks, twigs and leaves... Just frames your bird perfectly. I think your choice of colors is great.

The richness of Sandy's Coopers Hawk and background is outstanding. She has used acrylics on her two and I think they are truly amazing.

I think Sandy had made her white crown sparrow almost look whimsical. Don't you just love her background here! Good job Sandy!

I have a very busy Saturday, so decided to finish my last entry for this Art Challenge today.

Another pencil rendering for Crusty. This time she chose the pose on the limb. Very detailed and like the softness of the pencil sketches.

NEW ART CHALLENGE ~Abe Lincoln's Bird Collection

The new Art Challenge will feature several birds from Abraham Lincoln's wonderful collection of birds he has photographed. I think this close up of the Cooper Hawk is fantastic. Look at that eye.

This white crown sparrow is full of color and the background full of texture. This is great subject matter.

This shot of the Cooper Hawk has such majesty and elegance. Will make a great portrait.

Love the background with this female House Finch. I think I may have to try all of them. Remember, no deadlines just take your pick, do as many as you like, and just let me know when you have one ready to post!

Daisy Mae ~ Art Challenge...

I fell in love with the first picture of Melissa and Daisy Mae in the water. I had trouble with Melissa's features, sorry it doesn't look like you Melissa, but I still love this picture of you and Daisy Mae.

Laura (Cat's Momma) has finished her rendering. She got the movement of Daisy Mae walking. I like that. She mentioned she usually only does the horse head, and this was a stretch. I'm already excited with the ones we have in already. I'm working on mine tomorrow!

MorningAJ has done a wonderful job. She mentions this is her first attempt to draw and paint a horse. I think you have a great likeness to the photo. You colors are soft and delicate. Very nice!

Sandy said she will do a serious painting, but in the meantime, have a laugh at Sandy's caption to this one ~~ "Say Cheese" ~~ That's quite a smile Daisy Mae!!!

NEW ART CHALLENGE ~ DAISY MAE~

This is my friend Melissa and her wonderful horse "Daisy Mae". I immediately liked this horse since we share a middle name "Wanda Mae". She has sent me some great shots of her and Daisy Mae for us to try for our new Art Challenge. This is my favorite, and the one I'm going to start with.

A nice close up with the green grass all around! Should make a nice drawing or painting.

I really like this one too of Melissa walking Daisy with the water in the background.

This will be a good choice with the background and sun and shadows.

Melissa and Daisy Mae are quite often in competition, and she had the metals to prove it!

Now that my MasterLife Bible Study is over, and I'm not spending hours studying.... I'm putting my energy into my painting. I was looking through some photographs of our family at Lake Tahoe and found one of Jon, just enjoying the beach all by himself. I don't think he even knew I took his picture.

I'm quite please the way it turned out as it captures the moment!

BETWEEN ART CHALLENGES

Since we are between Art Challenges ~~ A little break ~~ I gathering more photographs for our next challenge. Someone has suggested horses, so my blog friend Melissa is sending me pictures of her horse Daisy Mae. Also I've been wanting to paint people again, as that is something I've always enjoyed.

My cousin emailed me some pictures and two of them were of pretty girls. Have no idea who they are, but decided to put them to watercolor and they are posted above.

Chris has finished her Jersey cow, and I like what she did with it! Doesn't it look likes that cow is staring at you!!! God job Chris!

I have a really busy weekend so it may be a few days before I put up another challenge.

THE COWS ARE COMING HOME....

A beautiful purple butterfly just flew in from Laura.... This is exquisite. Love the colors.

This afternoon, I decided to finish the cow challenge, with Abraham Lincoln's Jersey cow that I named Bessie! The challenge of this one is that dark shadow, which didn't turn out the way I wanted but I'm OK with Bessie.

MorningAJ, you have captures in your watercolor, softness, and a very realistic rendition of the cows from Sandy's photo. Love the lightness, the sunny cheery effect. Good job! Thanks.

I deleted my first version, and went back to the drawing board. I noticed I had the black cows eye in the wrong place...no wonder he looked like a misfit. I'm still not happy, but will move on to Bessie the Jersey.

Chis has finished her Butterfly challenge and it is truly lovely. You've done wonders with the shading and shadows. Now join us in the barnyard!

Sandy says these are comical cows with an attitude!!! I think they are charming, and very romantic under the moo-n light!!! Thanks Sandy for your photo and your painting!

I had a little time this morning before the boys came over to spend the night so did my rendering of the first butterfly picture. I used the masking liquid for the white dots, and rubbed it off after completing the painting. This was so much fun, I'm going to do the other butterfly picture too.

FINDING OLD PAINTINGS

I felt like I found a lost treasure when I went into my daughter's bathroom and saw that she had decorated it with a nautical theme. Years ago, I mean over 30 years, Don and I went to Portland Maine and I painted the Portland Lighthouse. My daughter liked the painting so I gave it to her. To see it framed and hanging in her bathroom was so fun.

She had also framed my "Old Seaman". This was a painting that I did, and then you wad up the paper and stretch it back into form, and it gives an old wrinkled effect. So after 30 years, my Lighthouse and my Seaman complete the Nautical Bathroom.

WATERING CAN CHALLENGE

While Jill was organizing and packing, I took a few minutes in the Laundry Room and painting a quick watering can for the challenge...

SPRINKLING OR WATERING CANS

This watercolor of the pots and watering can were done many years ago. But lately I've been wanting to do another garden picture using watering cans.

This is a picture Abe Lincoln posted today of his back yard with what he calls Sprinkling Cans. I love the composition and will use it as part of a new painting I starting featuring these unique garden cans.

This is another picture I googled as I like the shape of this one, and the rustic look. So after the graduations, and my daughter goes back to Oregon.... I will begin this "Back Yard Watering Can" Painting.

FACES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Since I have not painted anything new since Tahoe, I decided to share a few of my watercolor "Children" that I have not posted on my Art Blog.

These children are from photos on a brochure from Samaritan's Purse, a Christian Organization that reaches around the world to help children.

The two little girls above are from Africa, and I love the simple quiet expressions of their faces. These girls must be best friends.

Water is not an easy thing for me to paint, but I was satisfied with this young man from Mexico getting a cool drink from the faucet.

Don't know what this little boy from Asia is thinking as he stands in the open doorway. Perhaps he wants us to come in for a visit. Wouldn't I love to meet these children in my painting in person.

Do you like to draw or paint people? I think they are the most intriguing and interesting subject of all.

ANOTHER FORM OF ART

There is another form of Art in Tahoe. I'm amazed what someone can do with a saw and a few tools. This wonderful bear is in the yard of the neighbors to the left of the cabin.

These two little bear cubs climbing up the pole are so cute, and this carving is along the private road that leads to the cabin. You can see I took this the day it snowed.

I'm so glad the world is full of all kinds of artists.

Will try another snow scene, as I worked this one too hard, and it lost the fluid look and became too busy....why do I do that?

Watercolor Postcards

I brought a pack of watercolor postcards with me to Tahoe and thought I'd sketch and paint little postcards to send home to the grandchildren. This was the scene from the living room Sunday afternoon....Tomorrow I will be painting a snow scene. What a difference a day makes.

The blanket of snow is so beautiful ~~ so quiet, so white, so lovely.

Sketching at Lake Tahoe

The bags are packed including my Art Bag... Sketch book, paper, pencils, and paints and brushes. My little pink case with extra paint, sponges, pencil sharpeners, my spray bottle ~~Oh my, I'm so excited we get to be there for 10 days!!!

If my husbands laptop works I will be posted pictures from Tahoe, and also anything I sketch or paint that worth posting.

How do you like my new wallpaper and banner... I enjoy changing it, now that I've learned how. The young lady in the portrait is Hanna ~ she is a manager at Kinko's up North and is responsible for turning my paintings into greeting note cards. It was fun working on the picture of her and Jayden her son.

Pumpkin Pie

With my ABC Wednesday post featuring "Pumpkins" it seemed appropriate to share my painting of a pumpkin pie.
Why is it, we only bake pumpkin pies in the Fall, especially at Thanksgiving.

They are one of our families favorites, yet I tend to not think about pumpkin pie unless the leaves are changing colors, and the air has a briskness as I pull my sweater tighter around me.

I have a can of pumpkin in the pantry, and also the canned milk needed.... perhaps I'll put a scarf around my neck and stand under the fan to feel a cool breeze in this 80 decree weather and go make a delicious pumpkin pie!!!

A NEW BABY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

We have a new baby in our neighborhood. A little boy named Jaden Elijah. I went down this afternoon to see the new baby and tell the family I would bring dinner for them Friday night.

The new father greeted me at the door with this tiny bundle of life tucked in his arms, his face close to the baby's cheek. Immediately, I remember the painting I had done one Father's Day. It was like I was looking at the painting with this new father and son.

Is there anything sweeter than a brand new baby, the softness of the skin, the baby smell... Oh I love babies!

SEND IN THE CLOWNS

This was so much fun. My good friend from The Crone's Corner posted the picture below on her blog called "Wet Canvas". I was facenated with it, and had a rather lazy Friday afternoon so I took the challenge and did my version in watercolor. I loved the vivid colors and I'm really trying to do some art every day, or a least a couple times a week.

I'M ON A BIRD ROLL.......

Well I just can't get birds out of my head. Saw a new one in the back yard yesterday I've never seen before. Larger than a sparrow, but dark brown feathers on the back and white spots, his breast looked red, but not like a robin red breast...anyway I don't think do! I wish I knew birds.

I remembered these "Love" birds I painted for a Christmas Card. So my love of birds continues.

I finished the Mourning Doves this morning, so decided to add them to this post of back yard critter watercolors. I've been calling them "mooring" doves, but a couple of dear friends let me know they are Mourning Doves....so thanks...now I know!

The doves are so lovely, I felt they needed a little added beauty to their watercolor...so I added a nice boarder! What do you think?

The sparrows in our back yard always make me think of that wonderful old song, "His Eye is on the Sparrow." The Bible says that if the Lord sees a sparrow fall, how much more of value are we his children..... Guess that's why I love the song so much. I know he watches ME!

It's been fun doing these quick sketches and watercolors. Today I'm going to work on the two mooring doves who come daily to the feeder.
